Áo Lụa Hà Đông – The White Silk Dress

North American Premiere Winner of the Audience Award at the Pusan International Film Festival, The White Silk Dress is a magnificent drama that portrays how one poor and oppressed family manages to maintain its pride and dignity and to overcome adversities. Hoi An, Vietnam in the 1950s. Dau and Gu, who have slaved away for a landlord all their lives, finally are able start a family. However, they get caught within the unrelenting cycle of war and poverty and face numerous tragedies. Even after losing everything, they still maintain their faith in the Ao Dai-a symbol of the lofty and pure willpower of Vietnamese women-that Dau has left behind. Set against a background of the deep-rooted traditional culture, Huynh Luu's beautiful film not only captures the story of a family, the sacrifice of a mother or one couple's passionate love story, but also illustrates the spirit of a country and of a nation determined to keep their traditions alive. It is a sublime story that speaks, in particular, to the strength and resilience of women caught in the grips of poverty. Written by San Jose Film Festival

TRAILER

My Thoughts: There are talks about the movie competing in the 2008 Oscar in the category of best foreign language film. This should mean that the movie is good... or not. When I first watched the trailer, it was sounded like a scary movie. Then later on it's like a war story. Although I like Truong Ngoc Anh and the movie seems to be interesting, I'm not sure if I want to see it. Well, what are your thoughts on the movie and or the chance of the film winning at the Oscar Award? Check out other films, Saigon Eclipse, The Rebel, Saigon Love Story, Derailed Heart, Journey From The Fall and The Spirits.

This is a great movie. The cinematography, plot, how the story was told, the acting areexcellent. It's probably the best movie I've seen so far that was made from VN. I watched this movie as a person who loves film and look at film as an art and nothing else. Yes, the ending suggested that communism "free the people" and give them "happy" life, but it was done in such subtle and taseful style. I really think that it deserves to be in the Oscar nomination. I was so amazed with this movie.

This is definitely a great movie. The movie is basically about the life of the Vietnamese people during the war and the people from the North migrated to the South, Truong Ngoc Anh and her family migrated to Saigon in hoping for a better life. Also the story told how difficult their lives had to go through. Great movie, this is ALL the Vietnamese women should be, traditionally. Nowadays, hard to find any one who has that virtue. Mostly, messed up ones. We all should get the points by now. Great movie, should see and highly recommended.

They were a cute couple on Vân Sơn Entertainment show and also off stage as well. After courtship, Minh Trí and Việt Thi married and had two daughters.
